Armed rebels have launched a horrific attack on a school in Kasese western Uganda, resulting in the tragic loss of life. Ugandan officials have confirmed that at least 41 people, mostly students, were killed, and six others were abducted.
According to military spokesperson Felix Kulayigye, some victims were brutally hacked to death with machetes, while others perished in the flames that engulfed their dormitories. The Uganda military reports that around 20 members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group, with ties to ISIS, were responsible for the assault on Lhubirira secondary school on Friday.
Situated in the town of Kasese along Uganda’s border with Congo, the school caters to students aged between 13 and 18. Local officials have stated that among the deceased, 39 were students, while two were members of the local community.
Efforts to extinguish the fire were still underway on Saturday morning, and the military suspects that more casualties may be discovered. However, they have confirmed that no individuals are currently trapped inside the school.
Expressing condolences to the affected families, Kulayigye emphasized that the Ugandan Peoples’ Defense Forces (UPDF) are actively deployed to protect the area. Meanwhile, Major Bilal Katamba, spokesperson for Uganda’s military operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has revealed that the military is pursuing the suspects in the DRC and believes they are heading towards the Virunga National Park.
Major Dick Olum, commander of the UPDF operation in eastern DRC, revealed that the rebels spent two days in the town, guided and shown around by local residents, before carrying out this heinous act. He urged residents of Kasese to remain vigilant and immediately report any unfamiliar individuals, while also appealing for assistance in identifying the youth who facilitated the rebels’ entry into the area.
This brutal attack has deeply saddened the entire nation, and the government and security forces are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of all citizens.
