According to authorities, the AFP news agency reported on Sunday that a stampede at the Freedom City shopping mall in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, claimed at least nine lives. Just as the clock hit midnight, the event happened as parties began to usher in the new year.
People were reportedly stranded as they poured in to see the fireworks at Freedom City in large numbers, according to police. A stampede that followed the pyrotechnics caused five individuals to die instantly, according to Luke Owoyesigyire, a police spokesperson, and several others to suffer injuries.
Rest in peace comrades.
